Nazis in Athens

You’re now at the corner of Second Street and Franklin Street. The quaint streets of Athens were overrun by Nazis in HBO’s mini-series production of the Philip Roth novel The Plot Against America, staring Winona Ryder. The series featured an America taken over by Nazis (or the American equivalent) and the Klan, and Athens posed as mid-century Pittsburgh.

Here are some “making of” photos from that nighttime shoot, courtesy of Starlyn Joy Palmateer and Aaron Waid, taken from just about where you are standing.

Next, walk down the street toward the water, and stop where Second Street meets Water Street, which is also where the old ferry to Hudson was. You will pass on your left the Athens Cultural Center, a local institution featuring a wide range of art and other programming.
